Routt County Marriage Licenses

Marriage licenses are issued by the Routt County Clerk and Recorder at 522 Lincoln Avenue, Suite 21, Steamboat Springs, CO 80487. A Colorado marriage license is valid when received. It must be used in Colorado within 35 days, and an out-of-state license cannot be used or signed in Colorado. Apply For A License

Most Routt County marriage-license applications begin online, then finish at the Clerk and Recorder appointment. Both applicants usually appear at the same appointment. Each person must provide current, valid identification in English or with a certified translation. Examples listed by the county include a passport, U.S. driver's license, and U.S. military ID.

Marriage Application Fields

That portal is for recorded documents and marriage records, not for divorce decrees from a District Court case file.

Use And Return Rules

Colorado allows self-solemnization under C.R.S. 14-2-109. That does not mean a friend or relative may solemnize the marriage simply because the couple could self-solemnize. Judges, retired judges, magistrates, authorized public officials, and religious or tribal officials may solemnize. Out-of-state clergy do not need to register in Colorado. Witnesses are not required.

Proxy marriage is allowed only under the county's listed military or contractor conditions. One party must be a Colorado resident, one party must be a qualifying armed-forces member or contractor or employee working in support of U.S. military operations, all parties and the proxy must be 18 or older, one party must appear in person, and self-solemnization is not allowed. Absentee marriage uses a notarized absentee affidavit within 30 days when one party cannot appear.

Colorado recognizes common-law marriage, but cohabitation alone is not enough. A common-law marriage ends only by court dissolution, divorce, or death. This distinction matters because a common-law marriage may still require a District Court divorce case if the relationship legally qualifies as a marriage.
